Robert Thornell will transition into a new role in the new year.

The Northwest school board at its Dec. 16 meeting approved the hiring of Thornell as the district’s new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

He previously served as the district’s executive director of curriculum and staff development. His responsibilities in that role included oversight of curriculum development and implementation. He was instrumental in the development of a district-wide Community Based Accountability system that Northwest implemented in 2013.

“Rob brings a strong background in curriculum and instruction, a vast knowledge base in instructional design and strong leadership skills,” Superintendent Karen Rue said. “We are excited to welcome Rob into his new role and know he’ll step in and hit the ground running,” she said.

Thornell has a doctorate in education administration Baylor University, a master’s in education administration from the University of North Texas and a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech.

“His experience with professional learning communities and a focus on instructional goals will allow Rob to build upon our established foundation,” Rue said.
