ARLINGTON — San Antonio Northside Brennan hadn’t trailed all season or surrendered more than 21 points in a game, but the Bears hadn’t faced a player like Jerrod Heard and an offense like Denton Guyer’s.
Heard scored twice and threw for a touchdown as the reigning state title-game MVP led the Wildcats to a second straight Class 4A Division I championship in a 31-14 victory Friday night at AT&T Stadium.
Heard’s performance earned another MVP trophy.
Heard completed all nine of his passes for 95 yards and added 159 yards rushing on 22 carries. D.J. Breedlove shook off an early injury to contribute 93 total yards, including a 33-yard touchdown burst late in the fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on Guyer’s season.
Ian Edwards and Jordan Wallace led Guyer’s defense that limited the Bears to 268 yards of offense.
Brennan’s solid defense held Guyer to a three-and-out on the game’s first possession. But a fumbled punt return gave Guyer new life at the Bears’ 45-yard line. Nine plays later, Heard hit David Haynes from 14 yards out to make it 7-0.
Brennan tied the score at 7-7 in the second quarter when quarterback Da’Shawn Key found room on the right side for an 11-yard scoring run. The score was set up by his 48-yard pass completion to Nathaniel Wells Jr.
Guyer responded on its ensuing drive. Twice the Wildcats converted on fourth down, including Heard’s 31-yard run on fourth-and-5. One play later, he scrambled in from 4 yards out to make it 14-7.
Brad Grems’ 20-yard field goal extended Guyer’s lead to 17-7.
Brennan had a chance to make it a one-score game early in the fourth, but the Bears’ 40-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.
After that, the Wildcats’ ground game put the game away. Guyer methodically marched down the field until Heard struck again, this time turning a broken play into a 28-yard touchdown run to make it 24-7.
Brennan wouldn’t go away, though. Key weaved his way for a 37-yard score with just under six minutes to play, making it 24-14, before Breedlove sealed the game with his scoring run.
Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard, left, outruns Northside Brennan’s Llandre Mitchell in the first half at AT&T Stadium.
