Through the majority of TCU’s nonconference schedule, sophomore guard Zahna Medley has quietly produced enough offense to lead the team in scoring with 16 points per game.

Friday, Medley stood out among TCU’s scorers with a game-high 18 in TCU’s 78-46 win over Sam Houston State.

Medley drilled two early 3-pointers, which she said gave her confidence throughout the game.

“It felt good coming out and hitting the first couple 3’s,” Medley said. “I don’t think I shot really great from the 3-point line, but making some of my layups and making some of my free throws helped with my confidence.”

Although her long-distance shooting faltered as the game went on, Medley took a different scoring approach, which head coach Jeff Mittie said makes her such a dynamic player for the Horned Frogs.

“They changed their defensive coverage and she did a good job getting inside to the paint, getting floaters and getting to the free throw lines,” Mittie said. “That’s why she’s so good. You can take away one part of her game or play her defensively differently and she can go to another part of her game and be very good.”

Her adjustments fell in line with TCU’s second half offense, which pushed the ball quickly up the floor against a less-athletic Sam Houston State team.

The Horned Frogs scored 12 points on the fast break and had success running in the second half after outrebounding Sam Houston 22-17. TCU (8-3) was outrebounded 22-19 in the first half.

Freshman forward Jada Butts had a career-high eight rebounds, which led the Horned Frogs.

TCU dominated scoring in the paint, outscoring Sam Houston 42-14.

Guard Jasmine Johnson and center Angela Beadle led Sam Houston State (5-6) in scoring with 12 points.

Through TCU’s compact homestand, three games in six days, Mittie said he liked the direction his offense is trending as the Frogs head into Big 12 conference play in January.

“There’s plenty to clean up, but there is plenty to feel like we’ve improved,” Mittie said. “I think our group has really improved as a basketball team. I think our group has worked really hard to really improve the last three weeks and I certainly think like we’re a better basketball team.”
