The nonconference schedule hasn’t been particularly kind for the UT Arlington men’s basketball team, but the Mavericks get one final chance to save face against Cal State Bakersfield at 1 p.m. Saturday at College Park Center. The Mavericks are 31st in scoring in the nation, but they’ve fallen victim to their lack of defensive pressure. Despite scoring 82.2 points a game, they’ve allowed 81 points a game and run into trouble finishing close games. They closed Cal State Bakersfield out 62-60 in last year’s season opener in California. The Roadrunners are coming off a 26-point victory over UT San Antonio. The Mavericks are led by Reger Dowell, who is averaging 22.9 points a game and is 10th in the nation in scoring. This is the Mavericks’ final game until Jan. 2, when they begin Sun Belt play.
