Cameron Clark scored 31 points and hit two decisive free throws with 9.7 seconds left and Oklahoma held on to beat UT Arlington 91-89 on Tuesday night, the Sooners’ sixth straight win.

“I wasn’t really paying attention to the crowd or anything like that,” said Clark. “My team needed me and I was able to knock down two free throws.”

Buddy Hield added 19 points for Oklahoma (10-1), which was prepping for a showdown with former Big 12 Conference rival Texas A&M on Saturday in Houston in the Big 12-SEC Challenge.

The Sooners have never lost to UT Arlington (4-7) in seven meetings but they came close, never really asserting control over the Sun Belt Conference opponent.

Brandon Edwards’ potential tying 18-foot jumper at the buzzer rimmed out for the Mavericks, who tied season highs for 3-pointers (13) and 3-point attempts (33).

“To come up a little bit short is disappointing and disheartening for the guys,” said UTA coach Scott Cross. “But it shows that there are good things to come with our basketball team.”

Reger Dowell, who spent three seasons at Oklahoma State before transferring to UT Arlington, scored 30 points for the Mavericks. Dowell entered the game with a 22.2-point scoring average, ranking him 13th in NCAA Division I. It was his eighth game with at least 20 points this season.

“Of course, we have to play like this all the time,” Cross said. “We have been up and down, but we’re trending towards the up direction. We have to find a way to get stops and win basketball games.”

Starting center Stuart Lagerson missed the game for the Mavericks. Freshman forward Brandon Williams and senior guard Shaquille White-Miller each started for the first time this season.

The Mavericks wrap up their nonconference schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday against Cal State Bakersfield at College Park Center.
