For the second time in three days, a high school football recruit has switched his commitment and given his pledge to TCU.

TCU picked up a commitment over the weekend from San Antonio Reagan athlete Ty Summers, who had originally committed to Rice. TCU believes Summers could be like Jason Phillips, a former Horned Frogs linebacker from 2004-08 now with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Summers (6-2, 205 pounds) played quarterback his junior and senior seasons, but had played both ways through his sophomore year. Rivals rates him as a two-star athlete.

Phillips played quarterback at Waller High School, started off as a fullback at TCU and was quickly moved to linebacker.

“I’m hoping I could be like that some day,” Summers said.

TCU first made contact with Summers on Dec. 8, when they offered him a scholarship. Summers said he was excited by the offer, but wanted to fully investigate the school before he made a decision.

Summers and his parents took an official visit to TCU this past weekend, when he gave coach Gary Patterson his commitment.

Summers was drawn to TCU by its pre-med program, which is not offered at Rice.

“Fort Worth is a beautiful city and there is a lot of things to do around there for me to enjoy myself,” he said. “I just see it as a great opportunity for me.”

Last week, Jared Cornelius, a wide receiver from Shreveport got a recruit to switch his commitment and pledge to the Horned Frogs Christian switched his commitment from Arkansas to TCU.
