TCU recruits envision up-tempo offense after Meacham’s hiring

High school players contacted Thursday who have committed to TCU were enthusiastic about the hiring of Doug Meacham as the Horned Frogs’ offensive coordinator.

TCU announced it had hired Meacham, offensive coordinator at the University of Houston. Former co-offensive coordinators Rusty Burns and Jarrett Anderson have been offered other positions in the football program, according to sources.

Several sources said Meacham had already been on the recruiting trail for TCU before Thursday, meeting with potential targets and players already committed to the Horned Frogs.

“I’m ready to put up big points,” Dallas Skyline offensive lineman and TCU commit Ty Barrett said of Meacham’s hiring.

DeSoto quarterback Desmon White, who has committed to TCU and is recruited as an all-around athlete, echoed the projection.

“I think he’s very multi-dimensional and knows what he’s doing, and we’re going to put up some points,” he said.

Both players were recruited by current TCU wide receivers coach Curtis Luper, who was a teammate of Meacham at Oklahoma State from 1984-87.

Decatur quarterback and TCU commit Grayson Muehlstein had a chance to speak with Meacham while he was recruiting on behalf of the Horned Frogs this week and Muehlstein said he liked what he heard.

“I also like what kind of offense he’s bringing to TCU,” Muehlstein said. “It’s really similar to what I ran two years in high school, so I’m already kind of familiar with it and I had a lot of fun running it. So I’ll move right over to the new offense.”

TCU’s other quarterbacking commit, Foster Sawyer of Fort Worth All Saints, also said he’s had discussions with Meacham and has even diagrammed a few plays with the new coach.

Sawyer had previous experience with Meacham. Sawyer was recruited by Meacham when he was a receivers coach at Oklahoma State in 2012 and was then Sawyer’s second offer while working for Houston in 2013.

“Love the guy and I’m very excited he’s there,” Sawyer said. “It makes me more excited because the offense we run here at All Saints is almost the exact same, but a little more complex.”

Both future TCU quarterbacks said the offense they’ve seen Meacham run in the past and talked through with the new coach is much more pass-heavy than what TCU has run in years past and will be much more up-tempo.

Sawyer said it gives the quarterback the power to make a read through three options: a handoff, a short dump to the flat or a deeper pass.

It also allows the quarterback to get into a rhythm faster and keeps him from focusing on past failures as he has to quickly move on to the next play, Sawyer said.
