After finishing No. l in team roping Tuesday night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Trevor Brazile of Decatur clinched the 2013 world all-around title and broke the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s record for the most gold buckles.

Brazile, 37, entered the National Finals with 18 world titles. He was tied with Guy Allen, a retired cowboy who earned 18 steer roping championships.

But after winning the team roping during the NFR’s Round 6 performance at the Thomas & Mack Center, Brazile mathematically clinched the 2013 world all-around title and moved ahead of Allen, PRCA officials said.

In the 2013 world all-around standings, Brazile leads No. 2 ranked Jade Corkill, $312,579 to $153,159, a $159,420 margin with four performances remaining in the 2013 NFR.

The 10-day National Finals, which features the top 15 in each event and is offering a $6.25 million purse, runs through Saturday.

Brazile, who turned pro in 1996, won his first world title in 2002 when he clinched the all-around buckle. In all, he has 11 world all-around titles, three tie-down roping championships, four No. 1 finishes in steer roping and one team roping heading gold buckle.

Brazile has finished in the money in either tie-down roping or team roping in each of the first six performances at the 2013 NFR.

Ohl roping tough

Cody Ohl is 40. But he’s roping with the same type of speed and accuracy at the National Finals that he had when he was in his mid 20s, when he won his first world title in 1997.

With four rounds remaining in the NFR, Ohl is ranked No. 1 in the world title race with $148,879. Tuf Cooper, who finished fifth in Round 6 with a 7.5, is ranked No. 2 with $146,882. Cooper is ranked second in the average with a 55.7 on six runs.

Ohl has been on a roll since he turned in a sluggish time of 17.5 seconds in the first round after receiving a 10-second penalty for breaking the barrier, which means that he did not give the calf a designated head start.

“I stubbed my toe in the second round and I knew it was the right start and it just didn’t work,” Ohl said. “I took that start three more times and won first with it (in rounds three through five). I got the start figured out and I’m going to keep coming with it.”

New NFR record

Taylor Jacob of Carmine won the sixth round of barrel racing with a NFR record time of 13.37 seconds. The previous record was 13.46, which was accomplished in 2011 by Carlee Pierce of Stephenville.

New TV contract

CBS Sports Network will be the new home for the National Finals Rodeo at least for the next two years, officials said Tuesday. The network also will televise the Wrangler Champions Challenge, a competition that features 10 world class competitors in each event.
