Linebacker shuffle takes another spin for Cowboys

The Cowboys’ carousel at linebacker continues.

The good news is an MRI on the injured neck of middle linebacker Sean Lee revealed no structural damage. Lee should be able to play Sunday, which is what he predicted in the locker room after Monday night’s game in frosty Chicago.

Lee had missed the previous two games after leaving against the Saints on Nov. 10 with a hamstring injury. He has never played all 16 games in any of his four seasons.

Starting weakside linebacker Bruce Carter left with a hamstring injury Monday night and probably will miss Sunday’s game.

The Cowboys ended the loss to the Bears with Cameron Lawrence at weakside linebacker, Ernie Sims in the middle and Kyle Wilber on the strongside.

Justin Durant, who has started five games at strongside linebacker, should be close to returning. He has been inactive for four games this season, including the past three with a hamstring injury.

The Cowboys remain hopeful linebacker DeVonte Holloman can get back on the field this season. He has missed the past seven games with a neck injury.

Receiver Dwayne Harris re-injured his hamstring in Monday’s game and likely will miss the Packers game. He had been inactive for the Raiders game on Thanksgiving Day and missed practice last week with the hamstring injury.

More from Ware

DeMarcus Ware got his sixth sack of the season Monday night against Chicago, but it was only his second in seven games, not counting the three games he missed with a quadriceps injury.

The defensive end had four sacks in the season’s first three weeks.

“He should actually be in the prime of his career, candidly, strength-wise, explosion-wise,” owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on his radio show on KRLD-FM. “That’s one of the things we got to, I think, count on, is him having more impact in the game as he moves away from his injury.”

Bryant frustrated

Dez Bryant scored the game’s first points, catching a 2-yard pass from Tony Romo. The rest of the night he had only one other catch, for 10 yards.

“Frustrating. There’s nothing else to say,” Bryant said.

Rookies Terrance Williams and Gavin Escobar led the team in receiving, with Williams catching two passes for 36 yards and Escobar two for 32.

Romo completed 11 of 20 passes for 104 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 109.2 passer rating before departing. Kyle Orton had mop-up duty just as he did last season in a blowout loss to the Bears.

“You always want to get going, and we didn’t. That’s what it is,” Bryant said.

Asked why they couldn’t get going, Bryant said, “I can’t even tell you. I don’t think that’s a question I can answer.”

Bryant has 70 catches for 908 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Mixed emotions

Morris Claiborne’s father, Robert Owens, died last week. Claiborne posted a tweet mourning his loss, saying: “Man God be working. Took my daddy on Wednesday [Dec. 4] and gave me a beautiful little girl on Monday.”

Claiborne has spent time with his family in Shreveport, La., since.
