Cowboys notes: Romo dismisses December struggles

Asked Friday if he had given any thought to his December narrative, Tony Romo quickly answered, “No.”

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is 24-5 in November, but only 11-15 in December and 1-1 in regular-season games played in January.

Romo was asked four more questions about winning in December. His answers were longer, but the idea was the same: The Cowboys don’t care about anything but winning in Chicago on Monday night.

“I don’t think the football team cares about December,” Romo said. “They care about winning this game. You could put this game in October, January, whatever, and it’s going to feel the exact same to us. It’s just a matter of going out and winning.”

It is about winning, but lately the Cowboys haven’t gotten it done late in seasons. The past the past two seasons, when the Cowboys have controlled their destiny in their division and had a chance at the playoffs, they lost their final two games each time and missed the postseason.

“I think [the media] add the extra stuff [to] the winning. All that matters is getting the job done,” Romo said.

While Romo makes it a media conspiracy, owner Jerry Jones is already on record lamenting the team’s problems in December.

“I think it’s real and I don’t mean to be trite,” Jones said. “You can probably tie that [into] why we have had disappointments in December. It’s hard to build up enough edge to play at that level during December, so you better be moving or having your arrow going up rather than going down.”

Linebacker Sean Lee’s attitude is similar to Jones’. Unlike Romo, he too acknowledges the Cowboys’ history of December woes and says the team must do something about it, starting Monday, if they want to shake that label.

“Until we can get over that hump, until we can win games in December and finish the season and take it into the playoffs, we are going to have that image,” Lee said.

Lee eager to play

You name it and Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee has probably tried it in his attempt to rehab from a hamstring injury that sidelined him the past two games.

Hyperbaric chamber? Check. Massages? Check. Active release therapy? Check. Acupuncture? Yes, that too.

Even old fashioned Tiger Balm, suggested by coach Jason Garrett.

“I’m still using the Tiger Balm right now,” Lee said. “Yeah, we use it to warm up. I don’t know if it’s exactly Tiger Balm, but it’s something to put a little heat on it.”

Linebacker Justin Durant, who missed the past two games with a hamstring injury but has practiced all week, is set to play. Cornerback Morris Claiborne and receiver Dwayne Harris (hamstring injuries) did not practice after missing last week’s game with Oakland and are considered doubtful for the Bears game.
