TCU women unimpressive in sloppy win over Stephen F. Austin

The TCU women’s basketball team won again on Wednesday, but the 60-52 final score over Stephen F. Austin was the only positive head coach Jeff Mittie could draw from the game.

The performance left a list of critiques and improvements Mittie had hoped his team ironed out as conference play rapidly approaches.

If anything, the list got bigger.

At the forefront is the lack of effort and intelligent play, Mittie said. TCU was outrebounded 42-33 with 25 of SFA’s rebounds coming on the offensive end of the court. The Horned Frogs also gave the ball away 17 times while recording just six assists on the night.

It was evident to Mittie that the Ladyjacks came to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to play a physical game against the Horned Frogs, and they succeeded.

SFA jumped out to a 12-2 lead thanks to six offensive rebounds that resulted in four points before the game’s first media timeout.

The Horned Frogs rallied to trail 28-27 at halftime, but it wasn’t until junior guard Natalie Ventress found her scoring touch that TCU gathered any momentum.

Ventress hit her first 3-pointer of the game five minutes into the second half and then launched two more three minutes later that gave TCU a 42-37 lead it wouldn’t relinquish the remainder of the game.

Senior center Latricia Lovings tallied a career-high 10 blocks in the game in an effort to make something happen on the defensive end of the floor when the offense became stagnant, she said.

However, TCU finished the game with just two fast-break points off of those 10 turnovers, another sign of poor effort, Mittie said.

While Ventress and Lovings made personal adjustments on the floor to help TCU nab a win, Mittie said he believes the real problem with the team’s performance is the lack of vocal leadership on the team.

“I know they like each other, but somebody’s got to start stirring the drink a little bit here,” Mittie said. “Somebody has got to be the accountability person. Somebody has got to hold their team to a higher standard. That’s what we’re lacking right now.”

TCU moves on from the sloppy win with four nonconference games, all at home, before the Big 12 slate begins.

That’s a month to cross off the many bullet points on Mittie’s list.

“There is a huge list of things we have to get better at,” he said. “That list didn’t get any shorter tonight.”
