UTA women can’t stop losing streak, fall to North Texas

The North Texas women’s basketball team handed UT Arlington its eighth straight loss to open the season Wednesday, earning a 70-55 win at College Park Center behind stifling second-half defense.

The Mean Green (4-4) allowed only one UTA field goal in a span of 10:20 down the stretch as it built on a 41-38 halftime lead. The Mavericks shot 20 percent from the field in the second half.

“We were just solid defensively,” North Texas coach Mike Petersen said. “You’ve got to play really hard, but you don’t want to lose your mind. We stayed in our lanes and stayed between them and the goal.”

The Mavs and the Mean Green played a tight first half. UTA (0-8) built a 25-17 lead after a 14-3 spurt with 9:15 to play in the first. Briana Walker split two UNT defenders on a drive through the lane to give the Mavs their biggest lead.

“[UTA] did a really good job, and executed for open shots,” Peterson said of the first half. “But we weren’t contesting those shots very well, either.”

But UNT took the momentum at the end of the half as forward Hannah Christian buried a jumper at the halftime buzzer to give the Mean Green the edge at the break.

Forward Briesha Wynn led all scorers with 18 points and led four North Texas players in double figures. Acheil Tac added 13 points and 10 boards.

Desherra Nwanguma and Walker led UTA with 13 points and eight rebounds apiece. The Mavs next travel to face Northern Arizona on Dec. 14.
