A Virginia company is seeking 200 people, preferably fluent in both English and Spanish, to collect credit card debt resold to it by card-issuing banks.

North Texas’ gain is the Philippines and Panama’s loss. Portfolio Recovery Associates closed call centers there because, says spokesman Ray Atkinson, more and more banks and an industry regulator, the Office of the Controller of the Currency, frown on such offshoring.

So the firm has outfitted a 45,000-square-foot building at 6341 Grapevine Highway in North Richland Hills as a call center, and is already training people, Atkinson told us.

But it’s seeking to hire more. On-the-spot interviews will be conducted Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Radisson Fort Worth-Fossil Creek, 2540 Meacham Blvd., Fort Worth. Another job fair will held in January. For more information, go to www.portfoliorecovery.com/careers.

Why a call center in North Richland Hills? Atkinson cited the suburb’s proximity to a major airport and the region’s pool of Spanish speakers. He declined to say how good the pay might be, saying only that it’s competitive.
