The UT Arlington men’s team got back into the win column Tuesday night with a never-in-doubt 81-53 win over Dallas Baptist at the College Park Center.

Lonnie McClanahan guided the offense with a 13-point, eight-assist game to give the Mavericks (3-6) their first win since Nov. 13, snapping a five-game skid.

Coach Scott Cross expressed a sigh of relief in earning the win on his birthday, but more importantly, he sees the progress his team has made over the last few weeks is finally resulting in complete games.

Despite letting the game at Texas get away last week, Cross noted that the loss would benefit his team moving forward.

“As much as a loss like that stings, it helps you see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. “We’re playing the right way right now.”

Brandon Edwards nabbed his sixth double-double of the season with a 16-point, 10-rebound game. He continues to establish himself as one of the premier forwards in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Mavs turned in their best defensive performance of the season against a team that had won two straight, holding the Patriots (3-4) to just 29.3 percent shooting from the floor. Their leading scorer, Jonathan Perry, only scored nine in his first game after putting up 47 last week.

The Mavericks took advantage of a smaller Patriots team that was cold from the floor. DBU moved the ball well and set itself up for open looks but couldn’t get many of them to fall.

UTA next plays Weber State on Saturday at home.
