The UT Arlington basketball team fell short of beating Texas in Austin on Friday, but there were encouraging signs to build on heading into Tuesday night’s 7:30 game with area rival Dallas Baptist at College Park Center.

Although they dropped their fifth straight game, the Mavericks took a halftime lead on the road for the first time this season.

They started fast and held a 12-point lead in the first half, but struggled to close out Texas.

They’ll be tasked with taking on the Patriots and red-hot Jonathan Perry, who scored a school-record 47 points in an 89-80 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State last week. The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward averages 23.7 points per game.

In their game, UTA held Texas to just 38.3 percent shooting, the second time this season the Mavericks have held an opponent under 40 percent.

The Patriots are shooting 47.4 percent on the season, so UTA will need to be at its defensive best to keep up.

Reger Dowell leads the Mavericks in scoring with 23.6 points per game.
