Police are investigating the shooting of a suspected burglar by a homeowner early Monday morning.

The shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Hawthorne Avenue in the Berkeley Place neighborhood on the south side of Fort Worth.

The homeowner’s burglary alarm went off about 4:40 a.m., and the homeowner found someone trying to break into his detached garage, police said. The homeowner fired several shots outside his residence, said Sgt. Kelly Peel, a Fort Worth police spokesman.

“Officers located a Hispanic adult male with a gunshot wound in close proximity to the call location,” Peel said.

The homeowner's wife called 911. Police followed a blood trail to find the accused burglar shot twice, according to NBC5. The wounded man was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was in stable condition, Peel said.

Five burglaries have been reported within two blocks along Hawthorne this year, including one at the home where Monday’s shooting took place.

On April 15, which was also a Monday, police were called to the same home, where a break-in occurred between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The police report doesn’t provide any details about the burglary.

In October, burglaries were reported at two houses in the same block of Hawthorne, and another house in the 2200 block of Hawthorne reported two burglaries, one in in March and another in May.
