Cowboys notes: Romo comes in out of the cold to deliver Cowboys victory

Tony Romo woke up and felt like he was in a cold medicine commercial.

He didn’t feel good.

But he got up, reached for all the medicine he could find, and delivered a 31-24 victory for the Dallas Cowboys.

“A bunch of stuff, I don’t even know,” he said, asked what he took to feel better. “It’s a virus, so you just hold on, try to get better. No big deal.”

Romo completed 23 of 32 passes for 225 yards, a touchdown and took two sacks. He was perfect in the second half, going 12-for-12, and finished with a 101.7 quarterback rating. He had a completion percentage of 70 or better for the first time since San Diego.

Not bad for what could have been a sick day.

“He didn’t have a great look on his face from a physical standpoint. He looked a little drawn to me,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We talked about the great Joe Montana story in the Cotton Bowl. We didn’t actually get him the chicken soup, but we tried to get a little drama going so maybe he would respond to it.

“I think as much as anything else, when he got going out there, he started feeling good, particularly in that drive before the half, and I think it carried into the second half.”

Romo didn’t want the hero treatment.

“Whatever it is — a bug, some shape or form — you know, you just kind of feel down,” he said. “But it’s no different than guys playing through pain or anything. It’s just part of football.”

Carr shift

Cornerback Brandon Carr said it was time to change momentum when he made an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

“They got enough big balls on us throughout the game that I felt it was time to go ahead and make a play and shift the momentum,” Carr said of his play against Jacoby Ford, with the Raiders trying to tie the game. “Credit to them. They made a lot of great plays.

“At the same time, I know our capabilities on those same plays, we can make those.”

The interception was Carr’s sixth with the Cowboys since he signed a $50.1 million free agent contract in 2012.

Lee for Chicago

Sean Lee said he’d be surprised if he can’t play against Chicago, and owner Jerry Jones said he is planning on having the middle linebacker available for the Dec. 9 Monday night game.

“I think I’m on track to being back that game,” Lee said. “Can’t have any setbacks. I’ve put in good work.”

Wilber performance

Kyle Wilber, playing strongside linebacker for a second game, had four tackles, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery. It encouraged the Cowboys about the fourth-round pick from 2012, who hasn’t been able to find a position since he was drafted to be a 3-4 outside linebacker.

“He certainly is still learning the position,” Garrett said. “He doesn’t always pull the trigger as quick as he needs to just because he hasn’t seen the looks as much. But he is playing better and better.”

International date

Next season, the Cowboys will play Jacksonville in Week 10 on Nov. 9 in London.

The first game will be played in Week 4 on Sept. 28, with the Oakland Raiders facing the Miami Dolphins. In Week 8, Atlanta plays Detroit on Oct. 26.
