Briana Walker scored 27 points and had 12 points — in the first half — but UT Arlington still lost to Abilene Christian 79-72 on Wednesday night at College Park Center.

Walker, a 6-foot-2 senior from Fort Worth Wyatt, finished with 32 points and 15 rebounds. Mavericks junior Tahlia Pope had a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds.

Nevertheless, UTA fell to 0-7 on the season.

“Briana was a warrior tonight. We told her she could go out there and score on them, and she believed what we told her and she did just that,” UTA coach Krista Gerlich told utamavs.com.

Walker did not start and played only 28 minutes before fouling out with 2:33 to play.

Despite Walker’s first-half output, UTA trailed the visitors 43-40 at halftime.

A Walker layup gave UTA its only lead of the game, 51-50, with 15:39 left in the second half.

The Mavericks mounted one last charge, trimming a nine-point deficit to 71-68 on Desherra Nwanguma’s layup and again 73-70 on Laila Suleiman’s two free throws with 2:15 left.

Pope’s layup with 40 seconds left again made the deficit three at 75-72, but Abilene Christian scored the final four points.

UTA returns to action next Wednesday, hosting North Texas at College Park Center.
