Guard Zahna Medley scored a season-high 27 points but TCU couldn’t overcome shooting 19 percent from the field as a team and lost to South Dakota State 57-52 on Wednesday in the second day of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope.

Medley, a 5-foot-6 sophomore hit 5 of 12 from beyond the 3-point arc, but was only 1 of 8 on two-point attempts. TCU (4-2) was 14 of 73 (19.2 percent) from the field and was 9 of 61 (14.7 percent) without Medley’s prowess on 3-pointers.

South Dakota State hit only 28 percent from the field (15 of 54). The Jackrabbits, however, made 20 of 29 free throws to 17 of 28 for the Horned Frogs.

Medley also had five rebounds and five steals. Latricia Lovings, a 6-3 senior, had a standout game on defense for TCU, with six blocks, five steals and eight rebounds.

Lovings (0-6), Veja Hamilton (1-11), Klara Bradshaw (1-9), Donielle Breaux (1-9) and Natalie Ventress (1-8) all had nightmarish shooting games for the Frogs.

TCU led for most of the first half, with its largest lead at seven, and held a 30-29 edge at halftime. But SDSU came out and hit two 3-pointers to take a 40-33 lead after a slow-starting second half.

The Frogs led once in the second half, 47-46, after Ventress’ 3-pointer. SDSU built the lead to 55-48 with 37 seconds left and withstood two late steals by TCU’s Chelsea Prince for the win.

It was the second meeting all time betweeen the teams. South Dakota State defeated TCU 90-55 in the first-round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament in Lubbock.

TCU closes its tournament stay at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 16-ranked Purdue.
