Edward “Eddie” Briles, 59, the older brother of Baylor football coach Art Briles, died Wednesday after falling in the bathroom of his home in Haskell on Tuesday, according to ESPN.

John Greeson, pastor at the Church of Christ in Rule, told ESPN that Eddie Briles died of a head injury after he was taken off a ventilator at a hospital in Abilene on Wednesday.

Eddie Briles is survived by his wife, Teresa, and their two children.

Greeson said Art Briles was able to see his brother at the hospital on Tuesday.

Eddie Briles was the last surviving member of Art Briles’ immediate family.

Their parents were killed on Oct. 16, 1976 when a tanker truck veered into their lane as they drove from Rule to Dallas to watch Art Briles play for the Houston Cougars against SMU. The tanker truck hit the car head on. Dennis and Wanda Briles and his aunt, Elsie “Tottie” Kittley, were all killed instantly.

Baylor Athletic Director Ian McCaw issued a brief statement Wednesday.

“Our deepest condolences go out on behalf of Baylor Nation to the Briles family following the loss of Coach Art Briles’ older brother Eddie earlier today. We’ve seen an immediate and overwhelming outpouring of love and sympathy. We ask Baylor Nation to support Coach Briles and his family by respecting their privacy as they mourn their loss,” he said.

The No. 9 Bears play at TCU on Saturday.
