A clerk at Smokin Dragon Gifts fatally shot a man Tuesday morning who he evidently believed was shoplifting, Arlington police said.

Johnathan Brian Lambert, 28, of River Oaks was in the Arlington Jail on Tuesday night facing a murder charge, a police spokeswoman said in a news release.

The name of the dead man had not been released.

Officers responded to a 911 call at 10:45 a.m. from the shop in the 5900 block of South Cooper Street. They found Lambert and another clerk holding two men at gunpoint, spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard said.

One of the men was wounded, and he was taken to Medical Center of Arlington, where he died.

“It appears that a customer in the store had attempted to steal an item,” Richard said. “Lambert fired his weapon as the shoplifter attempted to flee the store, hitting him. A friend of the shoplifter was in the parking [lot] … and was also confronted by the armed store clerks.”

Officers believe that the dead man and his companion were unarmed and that Lambert fired the only shot, she said.

“Detectives believe that the clerk fired his weapon at the shoplifter with no direct threat to the clerk, other employees or customers,” the news release said.
