North Texas women dominate Bethune-Cookman

The North Texas women raced out to a double-digit lead in the first five minutes and never looked back, routing Bethune-Cookman 82-49 Sunday at the Super Pit.

The victory completes UNT’s two-game sweep of the Hospitality Hill Challenge and gives the Mean Green its first winning streak of the season.

Senior guard Desiree Nelson led the Mean Green’s first-half assault with 12 points as UNT (3-2) built a 44-15 halftime advantage. Sophomore forward Acheil Tac added eight points and nine rebounds in the first half on her way to her second double-double this year.

The Mean Green shot 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range in the first half.

“That was better,” North Texas coach Mike Petersen said. “We played really hard, and we took the fight out of them early.”

North Texas also dominated on the defensive end as Bethune-Cookman (1-5) shot only 5-of-31 from the field in the first half and 23 percent overall.

North Texas tallied its highest scoring output of the young season. Junior guard BreAnna Dawkins led the way with 14 points and a season-high six assists.

The Mean Green showed great balance as 11 players recorded points in the game.

“Everyone played really well,” Petersen said. “It didn't matter who we rolled out there.”

Freshman guards Candice Adams and Terra Ellison each had their best games of the season. Adams had four points and three assists, while Ellison finished with nine points and three rebounds despite playing only eight minutes.

The North Texas women will remain at home to face undefeated Grand Canyon (4-0) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
