ARLINGTON — DeSoto came up with two big plays, one on offense and one on defense, in the last five minutes to rally for a 34-30 victory over Coppell in a Class 5A Division I area-round game Saturday at AT&T Stadium.
The Eagles (12-0), who finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the state by The Associated Press, had to rally from a 30-20 deficit in the last 10:45 to advance to the regional quarterfinals, in which they will meet Arlington Martin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Midlothian.
Facing a third-and-13 with 41 seconds left in the game, Desmon White connected with Kevin Thomas on a 19-yard touchdown pass for DeSoto.
That touchdown was set up by the DeSoto defense, which stopped Coppell (9-2) on fourth-and-2 at its own 49.
DeSoto earlier had scored on a 51-yard pass from White to Johnson with 8:13 left in the game.
Coppell had just increased the lead prior to that score on a 12-yard run by Parker Wilson with 10:45 left.
The Eagles compiled 380 yards of offense as White completed 11 of 18 passes for 163 yards and three scores. He rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries.
Coppell was led by Charles West and Gavin McDaniel, who rushed for 92 and 80 yards, respectively. Skyler Bonneau completed 9 of 15 passes for 100 yards and a score.
Coppell started fast, getting a 35-yard field goal from Adam Centers on its first possession. Four plays later Chris Adkins picked off a DeSoto pass to set up Coppell at the DeSoto 29.
West scored from the 29, but it was negated by a penalty. On the next play West scored on a 39-yard pass from Bonneau.
Kevin Thomas, right, of DeSoto catches the game-winning pass over Coppell’s Jacob Murray.
