Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban plans to honor the franchise’s 2011 NBA championship team with a special presentation.

He just doesn’t know when he’s going to do it or how he’s going to do it.

“I think the whole championship team will be honored, and the guys who were with us a long time will get something more,” Cuban said before Friday’s game against the Utah Jazz. “Out of that, I just don’t know what.”

Cuban even said he’s forgiven and will also honor Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd.

“I just have to decide how I want to do it,” Cuban said.

Kidd drew Cuban’s ire when he verbally agreed to sign a three-year, $9 million free-agent contract with the Mavs in the summer of 2012, but instead signed the same deal with the New York Knicks.

“While J-Kidd’s a Hall of Famer, he wasn’t really a Hall of Famer spending most of his career here,” Cuban said. “He had great years here, but so did a lot of guys.

“So it’s not really a real question of J-Kidd, it’s more a question of how do I want to deal with it. Do I want to do a Ring of Honor, put a team in by year and honor all the guys on the team. I don’t know. I haven’t decided yet.”

Rockets wanted Dirk

Apparently, after the Houston Rockets beat the Mavs in the Dwight Howard Sweepstakes this past summer, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey decided to taunt the Mavs about it.

Cuban said Donnie Nelson, the team’s president of basketball operations, received a call from Morey asking if they would consider trading Dirk Nowitzki.

“They called Donnie, and I told him, are you sure?” Cuban said. “I said have them text me. I kept the text.”

Cuban said no actual trade offer came from the Rockets.

“All he said was, would you trade Dirk?” Cuban said.

Asked specifically when the call came from the Rockets, Cuban said: “About three hours after Dwight signed [with the Rockets].”

Cuban didn’t believe the Rockets were trying to rub it in the Mavs’ face that they had beaten them in the bid to acquire Howard.

“It’s something rivals do,” Cuban said. “But I don’t blame [the Rockets]. That’s fine. But payback is a [expletive delete].”

So, what was Cuban’s response when he got the text from the Rockets?

“I said, ‘Are you serious?’ But no expletives. They don’t carry as much weight via text.”

Mekel learning his role

Rookie point guard Gal Mekel had a solemn reaction when asked about not playing in Wednesday’s 123-120 victory over Houston. It was the first time Mekel didn’t play in a game this season.

“It can happen,” Mekel said. “This is a professional team and I’ve got to be ready every time.

“I’m here for the team, we had a great win and that’s it. This is how it goes.”

Mekel went into Friday’s game against Utah averaging 3.9 points and 2.5 assists.
