Behind an offense that has found an early stride, the Tarleton State men’s basketball team welcomes Lubbock Christian to Wisdom Gym at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Texans (4-0) average a Lone Star Conference-best 101.3 points a game on offense, after topping the century mark in two of their four games thus far.

“We have five guys that are starting that have had experience in this offense in previous seasons,” Tarleton State coach Lonn Reisman said of why his team has been successful. “But right now I feel like I have 10 guys that are legitimate starters. When you have a team that is this deep and is already jelling like they are, you expect good things when we get further in the schedule.”

Leading Tarleton on offense is Chuck Guy, the LSC offensive player of the week. Guy has averaged 19 points a game and scored at least 15 in three of the four games.

For Reisman, a focus in practice has been on improving defensively. Reisman said that his team has to work on improving on the boards and footwork defensively.

“If we are going to be the team that we want to be, we have to be a better rebounding team,” Reisman said. “Jon Cathey-Macklin has been a force on the backboards and Tashawn Mabry has been a great new addition. They both have to continue to step up and improve going into each game.”

Lubbock Christian, from the Heartland Conference, has allowed fewer than 70 points a game in its two games. The Chaparrals let a nine-point lead slip against Eastern New Mexico, giving the Greyhounds an 84-79 victory on a 14-0 run to close the game.

Texans accepts invite

The Tarleton State football team announced Tuesday its has accepted a spot in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove on Dec. 7.

The Texans (7-3) will meet Ouachita Baptist (7-3), the third-place finisher from the Great American Conference.

Tarleton State, co-champion of the Lone Star Conference, missed out on the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Division II playoffs after a 44-7 loss to North Alabama on Nov. 16. The loss dropped the Texans out of the top six in the Super Region 4 final poll.

The bowl appearance is Tarleton’s first since 1986 and fourth in school history. The Texans’ last appearance came in the Sunflower Bowl in which the Texans won 40-38 against Benedictine.

LSC awards

Six former area high school athletes were named to the Lone Star Conference’s first team on Thursday.

Midwestern State’s Keidrick Jackson, from Arlington Bowie High School, was named the conference’s offensive player of the year and a first-team selection.

Texas A&M-Commerce’s Vernon Johnson (Fort Worth) and Tevin Moore (Dallas), Angelo State’s Joey Searcy (Grand Prairie), West Texas A&M’s Taylor McCuller (Red Oak), and Tarleton State’s Dashaun Phillips (Duncanville) were also first-team selections.
