The Fresh Beat Band performed at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013.

GRAND PRAIRIE -- Back by popular demand, Nickelodeon’s The Fresh Beat Band returned to Verizon Theatre for the first stretch of its live concert shows.

The North American tour started in San Antonio on November 12 and will end in Los Angeles in February. That’s 53 concerts in a three-month span. While the performers -- Thomas Hobson as Shout, Tara Perry as Marina, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer as Kiki and Jon Beavers as Twist -- were admirably enthusiastic throughout the show, as a whole, this performance seemed lacking.

Unfortunately, there was not much new or fresh about this show. If you attended any of the 2012 shows, you knew exactly what you were getting.

At Verizon on Friday night, Hobson warmed up the crowd with a rendition of Deep in the Heart of Texas, which was the same way he opened up in 2012. This led to the familiar string of the greatest hits from the TV show and CD including Stomp the House and A Friend Like You. A new song in the repertoire was a cover of the Go-Go’s We Got the Beat.

While I wish there were more new songs, the crowd made up of mostly of young fans didn’t seem to mind the repetition. After all, the band’s core demographic is the toddler set. There was still plenty of dancing, singing and screaming with each song. One first-time concertgoer sitting behind me commented, “Wow, I didn’t know it was going to be this intense.”

For a first-time concertgoer, the show is a great way to experience The Fresh Beat Band fan and is still one of the best family friendly tickets in town. But as the band grows in popularity, fans will expect more than just the standards.
