A Dallas man was handling a gun in an Irving motel room early Tuesday when it discharged and the bullet went through a wall, killing a woman, Irving police said.

The suspect was identified as Michael Shane Gray, 36, of Dallas. The victim, identified as Traci Lynn Reedy, 48, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

The shooting was reported shortly before 1 a.m. at the Microtel Inn in the 3200 block of West Irving Boulevard.

Investigators determined that Gray was handling a gun in a room next to where Reedy, her husband and her teenage son were staying.

The handgun discharged and the bullet went through the wall between the rooms, hitting Reedy in the chest as she sat on a bed and watched television, police said in a news release.

The husband and son were not injured.

A woman was in the room with Gray, but she was interviewed and released, officer John Argumaniz said in the news release.

Gray faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide, police said.
