Monday night’s TCU women’s basketball game against Grambling State was never really in question, which came as a welcome relief to coach Jeff Mittie and his squad.

TCU took down the Lady Tigers 95-64 in Daniel-Meyer Colisuem with a lead that extended to as many as 35 points in the second half.

The scoreboard wiggle room allowed TCU’s players to work on different aspects of the game and allowed Mittie to insert his entire bench.

After a cold start to the game, TCU (3-1) went on a hot streak of field goals, hitting 19 of 21 before the end of the first half, giving the Horned Frogs a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

“I thought that spark in the middle was where we were getting layups in transition,” Mittie said.

Sophomore guard Veja Hamilton continued to improve on her drives into the paint, tallying her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The 20-point mark set a career high, breaking her previous best of 15 against West Virginia last season.

Zahna Medley led all scorers with 21 points, going 5 for 8 from behind the arc, her second-best 3-point performance of the year.

However, the biggest win for the Horned Frogs was the amount of playing time freshman center Klara Bradshaw saw in the game, gaining much-needed experience before the beginning of conference play.

Bradshaw finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Her previous high in minutes was 20 against SMU.

The playing time built up her confidence in a game that is gradually beginning to slow down before her young eyes.

“I believe that at first I was a little nervous, but my team helped ease me into it and help the flow of the game go better,” Bradshaw said. “Overall, I was getting it.”

Junior guard Natalie Ventress came off the bench for the second straight game and provided a spark in the first half that began TCU’s hot touch from the field.

She finished the night with 10 points and was a key piece to the Horned Frogs’ bench outscoring Grambling’s 32-8.

Mittie said he likes the adjustments Ventress has made when her 3-point shots fail to fall but doesn’t know if she’ll remain in a sixth man role or return to the starting five as the season progresses.

Senior guard Meagan Henson netted four points in eight minutes and put on a dribbling clinic in the waning minutes.

As TCU enters a stretch of seven days before its next game, Monday’s win over Grambling (1-3) gives the team plenty of video and experience to work with.

“The one thing that I think this game will give us is some things that they exposed in our defense and that will give us some good video in things we need to get better at,” Mittie said.
