A former English teacher at Sam Houston High School in Arlington was sentenced Wednesday to the maximum of 20 years in prison for having sex with students, the Tarrant County district attorney’s office reported.

Brandon Ashley McDaniel, 38, pleaded guilty on Monday to four counts of improper relationship between a teacher and a student involving three students. He asked a jury to assess his punishment.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, prosecutors Alana Minton and Christy Jack called five former students who testified that they had sex with McDaniel.

The jury deliberated about 11/2 hours Wednesday before sentencing McDaniel to 20 years in prison on all four counts, the maximum. State District Judge Robb Catalano ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.

Jurors learned that McDaniel was chairman of the English department, coach of the debate and mock trial teams and adviser to the International Baccalaureate Program.

From 2002 to 2012, he had sex with five students ranging in age from 14 to 18, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.

In 2009, McDaniel was reprimanded by school administrators. But he had two more sexual relationships in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, Arlington police got a CrimeStoppers tip about his behavior, investigated and eventually charged him with the crimes.

All of the students, and his wife, are similar in appearance: They are attractive, petite women with long dark hair, according to the news release. The girls all graduated in the top 10 percent of their classes.

One woman who testified this week is now a 20-year-old college student. She said she was 12 when she first met McDaniel at her sister’s graduation party. When she was 15 or 16, they had oral sex during a mock trial event in Dallas, she testified.

McDaniel gave her cigarettes, marijuana and tequila, she said. McDaniel also gave her money that she saw him take from a student snack fund, she testified.

Another former student, now 20, testified that she had oral sex with McDaniel during a debate tournament when she was 15 or 16. She told her boyfriend most of what happened.

“He got upset and told me he was going to tell my parents, but I told him not to and he didn’t,” the woman said. “At the time it happened, I didn’t want to tell anyone.”

Just like the two witnesses who testified at McDaniel’s trial on Monday, the two women who testified Tuesday said they had not told their parents that they were testifying.

“My mother still doesn’t know everything that happened,” the woman said. “I didn’t tell her because it’s embarrassing.”

Arlington school administrators placed McDaniel on administrative leave Feb. 8, 2012, and he resigned in March.
