TCU freshman point guard AJ Alix will spend a year in residency, sitting out the 2013-14 season because of academic eligibility issues, according to the school.

Alix was expected to make an immediate impact for the women’s basketball team as a four-star recruit out of Houston Bellaire.

She also would have enabled sophomore guard Zahna Medley to move to shooting guard, allowing for more spot shooting opportunities from 3-point range.

TCU (1-0) learned of the news Tuesday. The Horned Frogs face rival SMU at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Garland’s Curtis Culwell Center. SMU’s Moody Coliseum is undergoing renovations.

SMU entered the season receiving votes in the USA Today coaches preseason poll after finishing 21-10 last season and winning the regular-season Conference USA championship.

Senior guard Keena Mays enters the game as the reigning American Athletic Conference player of the week after hitting a team-high 22 points against Grambling State in SMU’s season-opening 87-65 win Sunday.
