UTA men’s basketball hopes to bounce back from rough opener

The UT Arlington men’s basketball team hopes to forget a rough opening game when it comes home for the first time this season to host Samford at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the College Park Center.

In Friday’s 116-87 loss at Boise State, the Mavericks turned in one of their worst defensive performances in more than 15 years. The last time UTA allowed as many as 116 points was in a 124-123 win over Sam Houston State in 1998.

The Mavericks were able to get their offense going behind Reger Dowell’s 20 points and Lonnie McClanahan’s 19 points. Brandon Edwards pulled down eight rebounds to lead the way.

The UTA defense allowed the Broncos to shoot 57.7 percent from the floor and drain 13 3-pointers.

Samford (1-0) won its season-opening game over Martin Methodist 79-62 behind forward Tim Williams’ 19 points and 16 rebounds. This will be the Bulldogs’ first road game of the season.
