Keller resident set for Ironman benefit event

Keller’s Stacy Etzelmiller will compete this Sunday in the Smile Train’s Ironman Arizona, in Tempe.

The benefit triathlon includes a 2.4 mile swim in Tempe Town Lake, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and finishes with a 26.2 mile run.

Etzelmiller is joining Team Empower as part of the benefit which is raising funds for children with a cleft palate. Cleft palates and lips are major problems in developing countries where millions of children suffer from the malformation.

Keller hockey takes 5-2 win over Mansfield

The varsity hockey team boosted their record to 4-4 after a 5-2 win over Mansfield last Thursday. It was all Keller in the first period, as Keller’s Ryan White, Bryant Kilkenny, Zach Hale and Hunter Frado had goals. There was no scoring in the second period, but after Keller’s Wyatt Gentry scored in the third period, the two Mansfield goals were inconsequential.

Keller will take on Highland Park this Thursday in hopes of moving out of the middle of the division standings.

Local diver takes Pan American diving championship

Emily Grund, a Keller 8th-grader at Indian Springs Middle School, recently took the gold medal at the 2013 Junior Pan American Diving Championship in the 3-meter springboard competition. She won the 12-13 age group competition at the Pan American event held in Tucson, Ariz. The event hosted over 150 divers from 10 countries.

Grund has also garnered four national championship titles, selection to the US Junior National Team and USA representation on two international squads. She has also been selected to the USA Diving Future Olympic Force, a group of 24 divers specifically training for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. She also won the silver medal in the 2011 Jr. Pan American Championships in Medellin, Columbia.

Grund has been swimming at the Keller Natatorium since its opening in 2003, when she began her swimming lessons at age 3. She now works out 20 hours a week at the natatorium and competes with the GC Diving Club.

Denton County hockey drops game to Plano

The Denton County hockey team lost to Plano, 8-2 last Thursday, but is continuing to show progress with a record of 3-4.

Denton County stayed with Plano after Landan Gumbert scored a goal to tie the score at 1-1 after the first period. Plano picked up three goals in the second period before Daniel Ryan would score for Denton County early in the final period. Plano pulled away later in the period.

Next up for Denton County is Allen (2-4-1) this Thursday.

NISD Athletes Qualify for State Cross Country Meet; McCann takes 7th

Byron Nelson High School athlete Andrea Karlen placed fifth overall and Northwest High School athlete Kelle McCann won and set a new course record at the Region 1-5A Cross Country Meet. The Byron Nelson High School boys’ team qualified for the state meet as well by finishing in third place. McCann finished 7th place at the state meet and earned All-State honors.
