Legacy finishes fourth at state, Castillo finishes Top 10

The Legacy girls took fourth place at the state cross country meet on Saturday, finishing with the best showing in school history.

Coach Lacy Beckler said she was very pleased with the overall effort of the team and her top runner, Maria Castillo, as well.

“The girls did better than we expected,” Beckler said. “Going from not making it at all last season to being a top five team in the state this year is a huge accomplishment for the team.

Castillo was the top runner for the Broncos cross country team at state, finishing eighth overall with a time of 18:47.86.

Beckler said Castillo ran an excellent race, improving nearly 20 spots from her showing last season.

“I was super excited for her,” Beckler said. “She has had so much at stake. She's worked really hard throughout the season, and she is super mature. For her, it's never been about winning medals, but just giving everything she had when she went out there.

“Last year, she was in the top 25 and was not very happy with that. We had a conversation about how she had one more year to do exactly what she wanted to do. She ran a well-executed race and it paid off for her.”
