Nearly 70 donors helped raise $45 million to give TCU’s Daniel-Meyer Coliseum a major facelift.

TCU’s board of trustees approved the renovations Thursday, athletic director Chris Del Conte said.

“It speaks volumes about the commitment of our university and our donor base,” Del Conte said. “I appreciation the leadership from our chancellor and our board of trustees … they gave us this opportunity and our donors were superior. They believed in this project and to get to this point, in the short time we were able to raise $45 million, speaks volumes for TCU.”

The construction will begin in March and could last 18 months. The new arena is scheduled for October 2015.

Del Conte said donations are still coming in, but it’s unclear how additional funds would change the renovations. The current plans, designed by HKS, the same company that designed Amon G. Carter Stadium’s $164 million renovations, will be as drastic a change.

“Nothing will look the same. Everything will be different,” Del Conte said. “We’re going to transform TCU’s campus. Our journey has just begun. We’re in our second year in the Big 12, our donor base, our fan base realizes we’re home. In order for us to maintain and to continue to attract the very best student-athletes we have to reinvest.”

Among the major alterations to the 52-year-old building will be lowering the court 3 to 5 feet to improve sight lines and a widened concourse. The entire facade of the building will get an art deco style to match Amon G. Carter Stadium and much of the other buildings on campus.

The current sports communications and marketing building, nestled between DMC and the football stadium, will be razed, and a three-story office complex will take its place. TCU’s coaches for Olympic sports, the Frog Club and other departments will have offices overlooking the stadium.

“This is not just a basketball building,” Del Conte said. “This is going to help all of our sports.”
