UT Arlington opens its season Friday by heading north to play Boise State at 9 p.m.

UTA team was built on strong defense by placing pressure on opposing players. But the NCAA banned hand-checking in the off-season, which will change the way games are played and called. That will tone down coach Scott Cross’ relentless defenders.

“It has completely changed everything,” he said.

He’ll bring a more offensive-oriented attack into Boise State, a team that held UTA to 46 points in last season’s 64-46 win in Arlington. Brandon Edwards returns as the leading man on UTA’s frontcourt after averaging 7.8 points and 7.1 rebounds last year.

The Mavericks might like to get a little revenge on Jeff Elorriaga, an outside shooter who drained six 3-pointers on them in last season’s win in Arlington.

UTA is joining the Sun Belt this season, its second straight season as a conference newcomer after spending last season in the Western Athletic Conference. The jump in competition didn’t hinder them much as the Mavericks came within one game of making the NCAA Tournament.
