Early Tuesday night, Joshua’s volleyball team gave Aledo all it could handle.

But eventually the Bearcats took control against the feisty Joshua Owls.

Aledo, the champions of District 7-4A, swept past Joshua 25-9, 25-7, 25-12 in a Class 4A Region I bi-district playoff match at Tiger Arena.

“I was very pleased with our defense,” Aledo coach Kathy Goings said. “We passed the ball well tonight. Anything they sent over the net we got a good touch on it.”

Aledo (35-4) will take on the winner of Tuesday’s match between Saginaw and Wichita Falls Rider on Thursday or Friday. Joshua, which was making its second consecutive playoff appearance, ended with a record 22-15.

The Owls fought hard in the first set, tying things up at 4-4 before the Bearcats went on a 10-2 scoring run to take a 14-6 advantage.

Aledo then ran off 10 consecutive points to put the first set out of reach.

“Offensively, we were stronger than they were,” Goings said. “They were a scrappy team. We just put the ball away when we needed too.”

In the second set, things went Aledo’s way from start to finish as the Lady Cats reeled off an 8-3 run to take an early lead. Then, with Madison Ginn serving, Aledo fired off 11 consecutive points to build a 19-3 lead.

Aledo kept up the pressure in the third set, building a 13-7 lead behind runs of four and seven points. Joshua fought hard but failed to get closer than 17-10.
