Report: Coaches wanted Martin toughened up

Miami Dolphins coaches asked tackle Richie Incognito, the leader of the team’s offensive line, to toughen up teammate Jonathan Martin after he missed a voluntary workout last spring, sources told the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel.

The Sun Sentinel’s sources said they believe that Incognito, who is accused of racially incendiary language and bullying tactics against Martin, might have taken those orders too far.

The communication came after Martin missed two days of organized team activites. Incognito was urged by his coaches to make a call that would “get [Martin] into the fold,” a Sun Sentinel source said.

Incognito has been suspended indefinitely by the team and Martin left the team last week and later accused the Dolphins of having an unsafe working environment.

Rodgers out

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday he has a fractured left collarbone and has no idea yet how long he will be out.

The league MVP in 2011 was hurt after getting sacked by Shea McClellin on a third down play during the Packers’ first series while he was scrambling outside the pocket. He hurt his left, non-throwing shoulder.

Rodgers said he hoped he would heal quickly. “In this case, it was considerably more pain than I’ve felt in a long time,” he added.

Now he’s out and the offense is in the hands of backup Seneca Wallace, who finished 11 for 19 for 114 yards and an interception against the Bears. Quarterback Scott Tolzien was activated from the practice squad.

Briefly

• Packers: Tight end Jermichael Finley was placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a spinal cord contusion Oct. 20 against Cleveland.

• Texans: Coach Gary Kubiak was released from the hospital two days after suffering a transient ischemic attack, or a “warning stroke.” Kubiak said he is expected to make a full recovery.

• Dolphins: Guard David Arkin was signed off the Cowboys’ practice squad to supplement Miami’s depleted offensive line.

• 49ers: Receiver Michael Crabtree has been cleared to practice after tearing his Achilles in May.

• Broncos: Guard John Moffitt was placed on the reserve/left squad list after he failed to report after Denver’s bye week.

• Patriots: Receiver Austin Collie was cut after playing in four games.
