When the original report came out that DeMarcus Ware would be out four weeks, he vowed to come back sooner. He called himself a fast healer.

It appears he might miss only three games, if he returns this week against New Orleans.

“I’m going to call it making it an investment in the future and the latter part of the season to be conservative on how fast we put him out there,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on his weekly radio show on KRLD/105.3 FM. “A lot of this soft-tissue injury, these muscle pulls … there’s a decision. It’s sensitive, the player can still play, but there’s risk that he could re-injure it. That’s the key. It’s when you have to make that ambiguous decision. ... Y almost, but you have to make a tough decision as to when to really put the stress on the muscle or on the injury situation. I think he’s ready.”

Ware played in 134 consecutive games before injuring his quadriceps against the Washington Redskins. He missed games against Philadelphia, Detroit and Minnesota, the first games he’s missed in his career.

Jones’ news on receiver Miles Austin and cornerback Morris Claiborne was not as encouraging. Austin has missed four games this season with a hamstring injury.

Claiborne was expected to miss two games, returning after the team’s bye week, after injuring his hamstring against Detroit.

The Cowboys have their bye next week, which could play into decisions regarding injured players’ availability for this week. Sitting out this week would give injured players two extra weeks to heal for the stretch run.

Jones on the mend

Defensive end Edgar Jones has missed the past five games after requiring sports hernia surgery. But he expects to return before the end of the season.

The Cowboys placed him on injured reserve/designated for return, and he is eligible to be back on the field Dec. 15 against Green Bay.

Jones, whom the Cowboys acquired in a trade from Kansas City on Aug. 31, started jogging Monday.

Jones had five tackles, three quarterback pressures and a pass defensed in 67 defensive snaps. He also played 77 special teams plays.

Helmet talk

Dez Bryant was called for offensive pass interference in the third quarter against Minnesota when he took off his helmet to argue with officials. That’s an automatic 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, and it pushed the Cowboys out of field-goal range.

Bryant said he didn’t know the rule. Jerry Jones says he should have.

“The Emmitt Smith rule is what that’s called when you take your helmet off to run off the field or take your helmet off when the play is over,” the Cowboys owner said on his radio show. “The Dallas Cowboy players should know that one better than any team in the league. When players don’t know rules, that’s a joint fault of coaching as well as the player.”

Austin waived

The Cowboys have waived defensive tackle Marvin Austin who played in one game, at Detroit, and made one tackle.
