Saint Mary’s Church in Colleyville serves up three-days of Romanian culture and food

A large slice of Romanian culture and lots of fabulous traditional foods were served during The eigth annual Romanian Food Festival, a three-day event held at Saint Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church in Colleyville.

Dylan White, a seventh-grader at Colleyville Middle School, went to the event for the second year in a row with his family.

His social studies teacher was giving extra credit to students who attended, and White’s family made sure to come at lunch time to sample the Romanian food.

Plates were topped with heaping servings of traditional Romanian foods prepared by the church community. Some of the favorites included ciorba, (a sour soup with vegetables and meats); sarmale, (cabbage rolls), mititei, (ground meat rolls); carnati, (skinless sausages made with ground pork, lamb and beef); mamaliga, (a yellow maize porridge) and cozonac, (sweet bread).

White even learned something about the country.

“They produce a lot of cabbage,” the 12-year-old said.

The festival had live entertainment with folk dances and bands playing Romanian music, and even a gymnastics exhibition. Children had the chance to enjoy the kids corner complete with a petting zoo, face painting, and bounce houses.

Bedford resident Julia Hossu is a member of the church and has been attending the festival since its inception.

The 20-year-old came home from Rice University in Houston for the weekend just to attend once again.

“Everyone is like family and it kind of feels like home,” she said. “Because for a lot of us it’s another chance to get together.”

Visitors were able to see the intricate iconography and colorful paintings on the guided tours of the church during the festival.

St. Mary's was built in the 1980s, but was replaced by a larger facility in 2004 and is led by Father Gabriel Popa.
