AZLE — The Trophy Club Nelson Bobcats overcame a 17-14 halftime deficit to win 41-17 over Azle, clinching a District 5-4A playoff spot in the process.
The Bobcats forced three second-half turnovers, converting each into points, and improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in district. Azle fell to 3-6 and 1-4.
The Bobcats needed only two plays to open up scoring. Courtney Miles found a hole and went untouched for a 66-yard touchdown. Preston Haire added to the scoring on Nelson’s second drive, this time capping it from the 1-yard line.
Azle responded by scoring 17 unanswered. Dylan Tritton connected on a 26-yard field goal to put the Hornets on the board.
E.J. Salinas capped a nine-play drive with an 11-yard touchdown, and Jamie King gave Azle the lead with an 11-yard scoring pass, pushing the halftime score to 17-14 in favor of Azle.
The Hornets fumbled the second half kickoff, giving the ball to the Bobcats on the Azle 18-yard line. The Bobcats needed just five plays to convert the turnover into points as Miles ran it in from the four.
Azle took the ball to the Nelson 20 before a 19-play drive was halted by another turnover. The Bobcats capitalized again, this time Haire running it in from the 20.
Haire put the game out of reach when he connected to Gage Vines for a 20-yard score.
Miles added his third touchdown of the game late in the fourth. The running back finished with a game-high 139 yards on 15 carries. Haire completed 10 passes for 150 yards.
