WACO — Crowley locked up a playoff spot with its decisive second-quarter play Friday night at Waco ISD Stadium.
Crowley (8-1, 5-1 District 8-4A) scored 29 in the quarter on the way to a 64-43 victory over Waco University.
Quarterback Matt Marner threw two of his four touchdown passes in the second quarter, and rushed for another score to bring the Eagles back after trailing 22-7. University (1-8, 1-5) took advantage of three Crowley first-half fumbles to gain the early edge.
But Crowley answered with a quick four-play drive as Tayvohn Glover scored on a 10-yard fade pass from Marner to bring Crowley to within 22-14 with 5:57 left in the second.
Marner then scored on a 15-yard run to cap another four-play drive, and Michael Williams caught the 2-point conversion to tie the game 22-22.
But the biggest play of the game came after another University three-and-out. Larance Shawblocked a punt, then Jordan McClendon scooped up the loose ball for a 17-yard return touchdown to give Crowley its first lead.
Marner ended the night with 244 yards on 13-of-19 passing, while running back Day’Lonzo Freeman rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
