Nolan Catholic scored touchdowns on its first three possessions, riding an early lead to a 41-31 victory against Argyle Liberty Christian at Doskocil Stadium on Friday.
Nolan (6-3, 4-1) claimed second place in TAPPS District I, avoiding a potential tiebreaker in next week’s game against Dallas Bishop Dunne after Dunne lost Friday.
Nolan made Liberty Christian (6-3, 3-2) pay for a couple of early miscues. The Vikings forced a fumble and an interception to jump out to a 21-7 lead before the Warriors kicked their offense in gear.
The teams combined for more than 600 yards on the ground. Nolan piled up 356 yards rushing.
Luke Alves plowed through the Warriors’ defense, finishing with 185 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Nolan’s David Authier eventually wore Liberty down also.
Liberty had its own game-changing runner. Quarterback Colby Moore ran for 203 yards and a touchdown, then tossed a touchdown pass to keep the Warriors afloat.
Liberty Christian pulled within 10 points with six minutes left in the game on Jon Aaron Howell’s 5-yard scamper.
The Warriors kept it interesting, but the Vikings came up with big plays to eventually put it away. The Vikings snagged a game-sealing interception on Liberty Christian’s final possession to hold off the Warriors one last time.
