Avery Johnson, former coach of the Dallas Mavericks and current NBA analyst for ESPN, spoke to students at Hillwood Middle School and Central High School on Oct. 24.

For students at Hillwood, Johnson’s theme was “champions under construction.” Young people should strive to be coachable, have a positive circle of friends, compete to do their best in the classroom and beyond and care about others, he said.

Johnson’s presentation was part of Just Say YES (Youth Equipped for Success), a non-profit group that seeks to educate teens about achieving their goals, and was an early kick-off for Red Ribbon Week which is celebrated in most Keller schools this week.

“It’s all based on our philosophy of just saying ‘yes’ to positive behavior, paying attention in school and the decisions they’re going to make,” Johnson said.
