One small step

I applaud the commitment of the Texas Food Bank Network to help the less fortunate, but I support the reduction in benefits to recipients. (See Thursday commentary, “Hunger clock ticking for 4 million needy Texans.”)

The SNAP program, like all social programs, is intended as a bridge to help people get through a troubled period until they can regain their independence.

Unfortunately, many people on these programs consider this a way of life, make no attempt to be self-reliant, take no responsibility for their situation and take the position, “Let the government take care of me.”

So this is one small step forward in an attempt to reduce our federal deficit.
