WEATHERFORD — North Crowley and Weatherford came into Friday’s game at Kangaroo Stadium winless. By the way the two teams battled, one might have suspected it was a playoff game between these District 3-5A rivals.
In a defensive struggle, Weatherford prevailed 14-6 over North Crowley for the Roos’ first victory of the season.
After a scoreless first quarter, North Crowley (0-8, 0-5 ) got on the board when Keith Thomas found Rodney Stewart for a 42-yard touchdown with 2:15 left in the half. The lead was 6-0 at halftime after the 2-point conversion failed.
The Roos (1-7, 1-4) threatened on several possessions in the first half, but came up empty after two fumbles, an interception and a missed 23-yard field goal.
Sophomore quarterback Bryce Burks replaced injured Weatherford starter Grant Werts with 6:47 to go in the third quarter and ran for 61 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore running back Jeuqwan Brownlee finished with 198 yards and both Weatherford touchdowns on runs of 18 and 3 yards.
Fred Brownlee sealed the victory with an interception.
The go-ahead touchdown by Brownlee came on an 18-yard run in the fourth quarter.
