CLEBURNE — Last season, Cleburne and Crowley, both undefeated in district play, met in Week 8 with the District 8-4A title on the line. The Eagles prevailed and went on to win the district crown with a perfect mark. This season, the Eagles (7-1, 4-1) broke the Yellow Jackets’ hearts again, 42-41.
Cleburne jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter after two Brian Baca touchdown passes to running back Darion McCullough and a 5-yard TD run by McCullough.
But the Eagles finally got their offense rolling and made it 21-7 after a 3-yard run by Day’lonzo Freeman.
On the ensuing possession, Cleburne (5-3, 3-2) was unable to pick up a first down, and the punt hit the back of one of the Yellow Jackets’ linemen. The Eagles took over at the Cleburne 11, and Crowley scored two plays later on a 4-yard run by Jimmie Hughes.
The Jackets extended their lead right before the half when Baca connected with Spencer Suitt on a 2-yard pass with just four seconds remaining. But the extra point was no good, and the Jackets took a 27-14 lead into halftime.
After both teams scored touchdowns in the third quarter, the Eagles pulled away with 21 fourth-quarter points, including a 1-yard run by Freeman that was set up by a 49-yard pass from Matt Marner to Tayvohn Glover. The Eagles then recovered an onside kick that led to Hughes’ 3-yard run for the go-ahead score.
