DENTON — Xavier Scott rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns as Denton pulled away from Azle for a 42-14 victory Friday night at Bronco Stadium.
The Hornets hung around after a personal foul nullified what would have been Scott’s 49-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but three fourth quarter touchdowns — two on defense — sealed it for Denton.
Christian Rodriquez threw for 182 yards to help Denton (4-4, 2-3 District 5-4A) stay in playoff contention.
Azle (3-5, 1-4) came into the game with the same record as Denton, but the Hornets dug themselves a hole in the first quarter. A muffed punt and a fumble led to Denton’s 14-0 first-quarter lead, with Scott scoring both touchdowns.
Azle adjusted, and, mostly behind E.J. Salinas, got its running game going. By halftime the Hornets had 10 first downs and had cut the Broncos’ lead in half, 14-7 after Dalton Cole’s 16-yard touchdown run.
But four turnovers were too much to overcome. Israel Galvan’s 40-yard interception return with 8:19 left in the game put Denton up 28-7. And after DeaVante Doucet’s 7- yard touchdown reception, Juan Campos made the play of the game, weaving his way to a 103-yard interception return for a touchdown, giving Denton a 42-7 lead.
Salinas, who led Azle rushers with 73 yards on 11 carries, finished the scoring with a 9-yard run in the final minute.
