MANSFIELD — It had all the makings of a shootout for Mansfield Legacy and Arlington Seguin on Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
And a shootout is just what it was.
Terrance Ivery’s 35-yard touchdown run with 3:56 left gave Legacy the lead, and the Broncos held on for a 44-41 victory in a battle of second-place teams in District 15-4A.
Seguin (5-3, 3-2) had just taken its first lead on a 13-play, 90-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown run by Cougars quarterback Kelton Moore with 5:36 left.
Kenton Mayberry returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards for Legacy (7-1, 4-1) down to the Seguin 40.
Facing a fourth-and-5, the Broncos ran a “student body right” sweep that was perfectly blocked, and Ivery darted down the sideline for the winning score.
Seguin’s comeback attempt ended with 53 seconds left in the game when Moore’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete.
The teams combined for 951 yards of offense, 765 rushing, led by Kijana Amous for Legacy. The senior rushed 32 times for 242 yards and three scores.
Ivery carried 16 times for 170 yards and two touchdows and passed for another 40 yards.
Moore led Seguin with 179 yards on 36 carries with three rushing touchdowns and added 116 yards passing on 10 completions.
The teams traded scores in a first half that saw 596 yards of offense and 56 points, with the score 28-28 at halftime.
Amous had all of his scoring runs in the first half. The senior opened the scoring with a 62-yard run, giving Legacy a 7-0 lead with 9:38 left in the first quarter.
He also ended the scoring in the half for the Broncos, darting off right tackle for a 14-yard score.
