Jerry Jones’ comments on Romo become a talker

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a way with words and a unique perspective.

He is admittedly prone to hyperbole. It’s always why his radio show on KRLD/105.3 The Fan is must-listen radio.

On Tuesday, he had a couple of doozies, starting with a story about drinking beer and betting on rats racing across the room with quarterback Tony Romo.

Then, in a continued effort to laud his quarterback and cater to a growing Hispanic and Latino fan base, Jones said Romo is the perfect quarterback for the Cowboys because of his Hispanic heritage — never mind that Jones initially thought Romo was Italian.

“We couldn’t have a better quarterback,” Jones said. “We just couldn’t. Bill Parcells and I thought he was Italian. Then we found out that his grandparents were from Mexico. We couldn’t have a better quarterback with a background of Hispanic for the Dallas Cowboys.”

Only Jerry Jones.

Where’s the O?

When the Cowboys lit up the scoreboard and put up more than 500 yards in the 51-48 loss to the Denver Broncos three weeks ago, it was supposed to be the beginning of a season-long scoring onslaught.

That was the basis of Jerry Jones’ moral victory comment and the reason tight end Jason Witten and Dez Bryant said the team had found its identity: offensive explosiveness.

Well, the Cowboys have been left wanting on offense in two games and two wins against the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles with 213 and 368 yards.

Although the Cowboys scored 31 points against the Redskins, the score was powered by special teams. Quarterback Tony Romo passed for 170 yards.

Against the Eagles, the Cowboys punted nine times and converted only five of 16 third-down chances.

“We have to be more efficient,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Third downs are a critical piece in this game.”

Baylor hook

The Cowboys signed wide receiver Lanear Sampson to their practice squad Tuesday.

Sampson fills the spot that was formerly held by defensive end Jason Vega, who was signed to the active roster Friday.

Sampson played at Baylor with rookie third-round pick Terrance Williams. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted rookie free agent in April and was released during final cuts before the start of the season.

Murray watch

Jerry Jones said he hopes running back DeMarco Murray can return to practice this week and possibly play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday after missing the Eagles game with a sprained knee.

But Jones, citing the Cowboys’ depth at running back, said the team will be cautious with Murray as well as defensive end DeMarcus Ware, who missed the Eagles game with a quadriceps strain.

Both players ran Monday and are improving.

Jones said the Cowboys can be conservative with Murray because of the strong performance from rookie Joseph Randle against the Eagles and the expected return of Lance Dunbar.
