Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn’t think it was appropriate for him to comment on Thursday’s retirement/resignation of Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan.

But he decided to comment anyway.

At the Mavs’ practice Friday at American Airlines Center, Cuban said: “It’s not really fair of me to comment because I have no idea of what went down.’’

Reminded that he came close to having the winning bid to become the majority owner of the Rangers three years ago, Cuban said: “There’s a lot of things that I was almost.”

Cuban, though, believes the Rangers will continue to be a success with Jon Daniels as the team’s general manager.

“All I can say is Jon Daniels is smart, and Jon Daniels isn’t out for Jon Daniels,’’ Cuban said. “I talked to Jon a few times and the sense I always get is that he’s dedicated, he’s focused, he’s committed, and it’s not an ego trip.

“He just wants to win, and I think if you’ve got somebody like that, then he’ll adjust to do whatever is best for the organization. I’m sure he’s upset that Nolan’s leaving, too. But again, I don’t know any of the spefifics. I’m a Rangers fan and I think they’re in good hands with Jon.”
